A Semantical Twist to Syntactical Navigation
نویسنده
چکیده
Given their simple nature, the success of keyword based retrieval systems is astonishing. Although these methods seemingly only process words (and their word counts), they rely on and credit most of their success to the keyword’s implicit semantics. In fact each keyword is a representation of a thought, or concept. Recent developments in NLP make it possible to use bigger syntactical units (like noun phrases) for IR purposes. The obtained phrases (and their subphrases) can be structured into a lithoid which forms an ideal starting point for feedback mechanisms like ‘Query By Navigation’ [1]. This paper will go even further and tries to involve the phrases’ support into the structure using a mathematical theory called ‘formal concept analysis’ [2]. The resulting concept lattice shows great similarity to the original lithoid and, since it consists of formal concepts, it leads the way to handle phrase semantics.

We look at various preservation theorems of classical logic ((rst of all, Los-Tarski theorem) which fail in the context of nite models , and examine the extent of their failure. In some cases, even if the old correspondence between syntactical and semantical properties does not hold, one can nd a new semantical counterpart for the syntacti-cal property, and vice versa-a new syntactical counterp...
متن کاملSyntactical and semantical aspects of Faust
This paper presents some syntactical and semantical aspects of FAUST (Functional AUdio STreams), a programming language for real-time sound processing and synthesis. The programming model of FAUST combines two approaches : functional programming and block-diagrams composition. It is based on a block-diagram algebra. It has a well defined formal semantic and can be compiled into efficient C/C++ ...
متن کاملA semantical perspective on verification of knowledge
The usual approaches to verification of knowledge in the literature have a rather practical nature, and are sometimes ad hoc and depending on the syntactical structure of a particular knowledge representation language in the definitions of the properties that are tested. In this paper a more principled investigation provides a well-defined semantical basis, independent of any particular syntact...

متن کاملA Semantical Notion of Relevance in Speciications of Database Updates and Its Computational Counterpart
Using the situation calculus as underlying formalism for specifying database updates as proposed by Raymond Reiter, a semantical notion of relevance of entries in tables to other entries is introduced. Also a semantical notion of relevant action is provided. Some properties of these semantical notions are investigated. In particular, they are compared with syntactical deenitions of relevance th...
